Family Tree Progress
Okay, let’s do a quick wrap-up here…
The PARK family has descendency ties to Robert E. Lee; his ancestor who was George Washington’s wife (maiden name CUSTIS); PARK/PARKE/PARKS descendants are connected to the Burchfields — the Burchfields via the Park line (somewhere) are kin to the Gustafsson/Justice family originally from Sweden; and how did I get here (this time)?
Tracing the Davis-Smathers connection of Aunt Betty Davis (married – Jack Abernathy) — trying to learn about her father’s family.
The other point of interest is the ties to a Cherokee Chief Oowahooskie (various spellings found). His ‘wife’ had been captured from a white settlement/group when she was about six years old. They had three sons; she and the sons were later released — they lived as white men, and were land-holders. This made for Cherokee heritage claims with US courts unsuccessful — but the Indian connection seems valid from research/sources found online, now.
There is also a connection between the PARK family and a CHANDLER line in Georgia…will follow this up later.
Another connection exist between the DAVIS line and the CARPENTER (ZIMMERMAN) families from North Carolina — this warrants further research, since my mother and my father’s ancestral line include connection to the CARPENTER (ZIMMERMAN) lines from the Carolinas.
NO direct Patey/PATE/PATTY connections — but have found AYERS/AYRES, PAYNE, and McClellan connections in the Carolina regions (where my husbands family were from)…The PAYNE connection may link up with the TEAGUE, SPEER, PERRY, OWEN or other related families who later migrated to NE Alabama (near Ft. Payne).
With the research from the past three days — “We are all kin” has more meaning then is previously did, for me.
Each friend I have helped with their family tree research, I have also found something that fit with prior research for my own complicated ancestral lines.
Are your ancestors included in this tangle of kinfolks?
Contact me with a bit of your grandparents vital statics (dates, location, family members) — I will see what I can find.

With lawsuit against N.J., little-known Indian group is thrust into spotlight – Breaking News From New Jersey – NJ.com
The story of the Sand Hill Indians and the $1 trillion lawsuit be gins on a wooded slope in Monmouth County.
Rising in Neptune Township, Sand Hill was settled 132 years ago by Lenape and Cherokee Indians who raised cows and chickens and helped build Victorian houses in nearby Asbury Park. Some of their descendants, who say they are more extended family than tribe, still gather for reunions near the ancestral hill.
Mike McLaughlin/For The Star-LedgerClaire Garland, a member of the Sand Hill Indians, holds a peace pipe that belonged to James “Long Bear” Revey, the tribe’s contemporary patriarch.
But during the last decade, a second group has surfaced in North Jersey, headquartered in Paterson. Its members also call themselves Sand Hill Indians, saying they are named after the same spot.
The trouble is, the Sand Hills of Neptune say the ones in Paterson aren’t Sand Hills at all. And therein lies the debate.
It began quietly as a disagreement about genealogy and bloodlines but gradually spiraled into a bitter feud. And now, with a federal lawsuit naming Gov. Jon Corzine and all 21 counties, that feud has thrust a spotlight on the Sand Hills — a little-known group that historians say may include some of the last few local descendants of New Jersey’s original inhabitants.

CHAPTER 2
CHAPTER 2
WILLIAM SPEER, SR. FAMILY
William Speer, Sr. was an Irish immigrant, American frontiersman, Revolutionary War militiaman, Indian fighter, merchant, homesteader, farmer, Presbyterian, and family man. He lived the American Dream and fulfilled the promise of the newly-formed United States. When he arrived in America, he brought with him youth, health, education, and those highly-desirable European Christian values of independence, self sufficiency, honesty and hard work. He also possessed a firm conviction of right and wrong and an unshakable belief and trust in God. By the time he died, William had passed these qualities to his children and thousands of his descendants have now carried this rich heritage forward. Those of us living today can find much of ourselves in William’s story, and much of William in ourselves.
We can be proud of our family’s accomplishments. We owe it all to a young man searching for a new life in the late 1700′s.
William was born about 1747 in Northern Ireland and immigrated to America in 1772 at the age of 25. In this book, he is William Speer, Sr.1 to distinguish him from his son William Speer, Jr.2 Much about his life in America is contained in a letter written in 1869 and a narrative written in 1874 by his son William, Jr. These writings are treasures of
information to the Speer family and because the earlier letter is so well written it has been published several timesA. See APPENDIX A for transcripts of these writings.
